Celebrating National Nurses Week: Meet Allie
not only is allie a rn on the bone marrow transplant unit & bmt clinic at texas children’s hospital, she and her husband, zach, also volunteer with his grace foundation! we are so grateful to allie for the way she serves each patient with excellence. we’re celebrating her, and her incredible colleagues, during this special week!
tell us a little bit about how you learned of hgf. why are the services they offer so important, especially to the patients of the bone marrow transplant unit?
i first learned about hgf when i first started working on the bmtu about 4 years ago and was immediately inspired by their mission. my favorite thing about hgf is that it was founded by a family who has experienced the journey of being treated at texas children’s. because of this, hgf has such a special way of anticipating and caring for not only physical, tangible needs of the patients and their families, but also their mental, emotional, and spiritual needs.
what was your favorite thing about your job?
my favorite thing about my job is the privilege i have to interact with and walk alongside these amazing kids and their families. i absolutely love getting to learn about each one’s unique journey pre-transplant, and also about their lives outside of the hospital walls. i learn so much each day from these kids about strength, kindness, patience, and resilience, and it truly is such a joy in my life.
i also work with the best team! each nurse, pca, physician/np/pa, pharmacist, secretary, therapist, and all of the people who support us on the unit and in the clinic really work so well together as a team to provide the best care for the kids we love so much!
what is something you hope everyone knows about the work nurses provide?
the work we do can be pretty hard sometimes, but we all really see it as such an honor and a privilege to be entrusted with the care of each patient that comes through the bmtu. we love celebrating joyful moments with each family, and being there for encouragement and support when they’re going through the hard parts of transplant. the kindness, grace, and compassion we feel from patients and families daily truly means so much to us!
do you have any favorite memories of your volunteering activities with hgf?
my favorite part of volunteering with hgf is getting to help assemble welcome baskets. it is so much fun to get to see the thoughtfulness that goes into each basket, and i love being a part of selecting unique items for each patient and family that will hopefully make their hospital room feel a little more cozy and homey.
